With the average age of victims being 28 years old, Illinois recorded 685 black homicide victims in 2016, coming fourth on the list. Out of this number, 626 were male and 59 were female. Majority of victims were shot and killed with guns while others were killed with knives or other cutting instruments. 70 per cent of victims (89 out of 127) were killed by someone they knew while 38 victims were killed by strangers.
