The film is an inspirational story of an elderly Kenyan farmer who became a veteran freedom fighter in the colonial times and defied all odds to fulfill his desire for education. Kenyan actor Oliver Litondo is the main character in the film, playing as Kimani Maruge, the 84 year-old freedom fighter who went back to school with village children that are young enough to be his own grandchildren. Since its release in October 2011, The First Grader has been riding high at the box office with over $714,722 worth of sales.
