On Saturday, June 21, 2025, South African musician Tyla Laura Seethal, also known as Tyla, will host the 2025 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, becoming the first African to do so.
The yearly event, which is popular for honoring fan favorites in music, movies, television, and sports, adds yet another noteworthy milestone to the 23-year-old’s rapidly growing international image.

As reported by Afrocritik, Tyla was nominated in two major categories in addition to hosting the event: Favorite Global Music Star and Favorite Music Collaboration for her collaboration with WizTheMc and bees & honey on “Show Me Lov.”
“I’m really about to host the Kids’ Choice Awards,” Tyla wrote on X in response to the announcement, expressing a mixture of shock and enthusiasm. With chart-topping hits, award shows, and animated soundtracks, Tyla’s 2025 is already looking like it will go down in history.
Tyla’s most recent achievement follows her double nomination at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs), where competed with fellow African stars Asake, Rema, Tems, and Wizkid for “Favourite Afrobeats Artiste” and with SZA, Kehlani, Summer Walker, and Muni Long for “Favourite Female R&B Artiste.”
She is included on the official soundtrack of the next Smurfs animated picture, which is scheduled for release on July 18, 2025, with Rihanna, who portrays Smurfette. Her quick ascent further confirms her increasing worldwide popularity.
Tyla’s career took off after her 2023 release of “Water.” Tyla is seen dousing herself with water in the TikTok video, which went viral as part of the dance performance choreographed by Lee-ché and inspired by Bacardi. Soon after, “Water” made it into the Billboard Top 10, earning her the title of highest-charting African female solo artist.

In 2024, Tyla released her self-titled first album and took home the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Musical Performance.
The album peaked at number 24 on the Billboard 200 chart, and later that year, she released a deluxe edition called Tyla+. Tyla eventually canceled her 2024 foreign tour owing to an injury, despite having originally indicated plans to do so.
Tyla also made history at the 2024 MTV Europe Music trophies (EMAs) by becoming the first African musician to win three trophies in a single night: Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best R&B. She also won the World Artiste of the Year category at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Beyond her musical achievements, she recently inked a deal with Nike and was named by Pandora as its new brand ambassador.
