A Ugandan court on Wednesday handed a 20-year prison sentence to a woman who cut off her husband’s genitals after she accused him of infidelity and being bad in bed. Per the Monitor, the Kamuli Chief Magistrate’s court convicted Kevina Nabirye, 35, after she pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter.

The convicted mother of four reportedly cut off her husband Mathias Bwamiki’s genitals at their home in Uganda’s eastern regional district of Kamuli on February 18, 2025. The pair had been married for a decade.

“After visiting the victim on his hospital bed and on your own plea of guilt and as deterrent measure, this court sentences you to 20 years imprisonment to reform her character, become law-abiding, respect the sanctity of life and to sound a warning to other would-be offenders but if you feel the sentence is harsh, you can appeal within 14 days,” chief magistrate Paul Owino said.

Owino visited Bwamiki in the hospital before his wife was convicted. He said Bwamiki claimed it was untrue that he had forgiven his wife, adding that the victim asked for Nabirye to be handed a sentence that would deter others from committing a crime of such nature.

“Our children are already haunted by the mother’s act and too scared to stay with her or her relatives but we shall take care, counsel, comfort and provide for them. However, I pray that you give her a deterrent punishment maybe even keep her away in prison till she is too old,” Bwamiki was quoted as saying.

Just last week, Face2Face Africa reported that Ugandan authorities said a 30-year-old man killed his 21-year-old wife after he accused her of having an affair with his father.

According to the Monitor, the fatal January 2025 incident happened in the East African nation’s Kabale municipality. Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Mr Elly Maate said that the suspect, identified as Nestor Natukunda, fatally struck his wife Shilla Ainembabazi with a panga (a machete-like blade). Natukunda is said to have chopped off his wife’s head.

Maate said the fatal incident occurred when Ainembabazi returned home from shopping in the capital, Kampala. Natukunda is said to have subsequently notified his brother about his actions. His brother then told their father, who subsequently notified police about the crime. Natukunda was ultimately arrested and charged.
