Ayo Edebiri is stepping into the world of Barney! The Bear star, 29, is in talks to join Daniel Kaluuya’s upcoming live-action Barney movie—not just as an actress, but also as a screenwriter.

The film, a collaboration between Kaluuya’s 59% Productions, Mattel Films, and A24, promises a fresh take on the beloved purple dinosaur, as reported by PEOPLE.

The movie, which was first announced in October 2019, “will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids,” it was said at the time.

Barney & Friends aired from 1992 to 2009, launching stars like Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, while the 1998 film Barney’s Great Adventure brought the beloved purple dinosaur to the big screen.

Reflecting on his upcoming Barney movie, Kaluuya noted how the character was once a childhood staple before fading into obscurity, calling him “misunderstood.

Added the Academy Award winner, “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

Mattel’s upcoming Barney movie is set to take a “surrealistic” approach, with executive VP Kevin McKeon comparing it to the works of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.
