Abeyi, the oil-rich region of Sudan is again the cause for contention as northern and southern Sudanese forces clash over its ownership.
Northern Sudanese forces invaded and shelled UN compounds in Abeyi on Friday, May 20, with soldiers, tanks, and armaments. South Sudan saw it as an affront: “a declaration of war.” Former information minister for the south, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, stated, “We will respond in self-defense.”
This comes after an estimated 99 percent approval to split Sudan into two states. The division is expected to take place in July.
