Kayelyn Ford called the police to report that her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Bell, was trying to enter her apartment using an old key before Bell allegedly shot her.
Officials say that soon after 3 a.m. on May 19, Bell, 24, shot and killed the 22-year-old shortly after deputies arrived and searched the residence in the 9800 block of Hooper Road.
When the officers saw no trace of Bell, they left, a sheriff’s office official said.
After deputies had left the area, Bell allegedly ambushed Ford and shot her. Bell allegedly turned the gun on himself and is now in serious condition in the hospital. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told WAFB that he is not expected to live.
According to court documents, Bell was arrested in April for a domestic abuse battery.
According to an affidavit from the responding Baton Rouge Police Department officer, Bell and an unidentified victim were fighting when the altercation escalated into violence.
The affidavit states that Bell told the officer that he started fighting with the victim after he was ordered to leave the apartment and began to hit him.
According to the report, the victim told the officer that Bell “broke a promise” and was asked to leave. Bell then attacked the victim, per the affidavit.
According to court documents, Bell was given a $1,000 bond. Bell was also served with a protective order, which required him to stay within 100 yards of Ford.
