Google has honored late Nollywood filmmaker, Amaka Igwe, with a Doodle on her 57th posthumous birthday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the doodle went live on Thursday, January 2nd, 2020 as an honor to her contribution to the movie industry in Nigeria.
The Nigerian filmmaker and broadcasting executive was influential to the growth of Nollywood, which has become one of the biggest creative industries in the world. She was also recognized as one of the second-generation filmmakers who helped begin the video film era of Nigerian cinema.
The Google Doodle is usually used to commemorate holidays, events, achievements of notable figures, dead or alive.
Apart from her contribution to art, Igwe was also the owner of Top Radio, a Lagos-based radio station and Amaka Igwe Studios.
Her role as writer and producer of the award-winning TV soap, ‘Checkmate’ and ‘Fuji House of Commotion’ propelled her into the limelight.
Igwe has won a number of awards during her career. In 2011, her contribution to the industry was recognized by former president, Goodluck Jonathan, who awarded her with the Nigerian National Order, MFR “Member of The Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Despite passing on in 2014, she remains a prominent figure in the movie industry.
