24-year-old professional footballer Andre Onana, who plays as a goalkeeper for Dutch club Ajax, has funded an electric grid to provide electricity for his mother’s hometown in Cameroon.

Having realized that the people of Mengueme in the small town of Ossoessam in Cameroon have been living in darkness, the goalkeeper promised to provide electricity for the entire hometown, and now residents will no longer be using kerosene lamps after fulfilling that promise.

According to reports, Onana was in Mengueme during his last visit to Cameroon.

Onana started his football career at Samuel Eto’o’s academy and then made a move to Spanish side Barcelona ten years ago. After spending five years at Barcelona Academy, Onana moved to Ajax in 2015 where he is currently their number one choice goalkeeper.

Onana’s current contract at Ajax will expire next year and there were reports that Barcelona would love to have him back. Last October, Onana said that he rejected the chance to move back to Barcelona over the summer, but admitted there was interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
