Chadwick Boseman was buried near his South Carolina hometown six days after he died, according to a death certificate obtained Monday by The Associated Press. The 43-year-old Black Panther star was laid to rest on September 3 in Belton, South Carolina, at the Welfare Baptist Church Cemetery, located approximately 11 miles away from the actor’s hometown of Anderson, where he was born and raised.
Anderson paid tribute to their native son, Boseman, in a public memorial held at an outdoor amphitheater after his burial.
Boseman died at his home near Griffith Park in Los Angeles on August 28, the Los Angeles County Certificate showed. The immediate cause of death was listed as multiple organ failure, with the underlying cause of colon cancer, the record said.
Boseman’s medical condition was not publicly known. A statement said he was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and filmed many movies “during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.”
The actor had surgery to remove colon cancer in 2016 after his diagnosis. He then had laparoscopic surgery in March to remove cancer that had metastasized, according to the certificate.
Boseman’s death last month shocked many as scores of celebrities and fans paid tribute to him on social media. “What a gentle gifted soul. Showing us all that greatness between surgeries and chemotherapy. This is what dignity looks like,” wrote TV star and author Oprah Winfrey.
Days after his death, his friends and family gathered in Malibu, California, for a small memorial service. His co-stars from Black Panther including Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke attended the ceremony, according to photos obtained by The Sun.
Boseman’s wife Taylor Simone Ledward also joined the stars to say their final goodbyes to her late husband.
Boseman was born in Anderson, South Carolina. Before acting, he directed “Heaven” and “Blood Over a Broken Pawn,” which he also wrote. “Clair Huxtable is my acting mom,” Boseman told The Hollywood Reporter.
“The way she taught acting opened up things for me. I would have to take acting classes, but it was purely as director to know what the actors were doing. But when she taught it, it became something where I was like, ‘I want to experience that. I want to know, really, what that feels like.’”
