Adam Abdul-Jabbar, the son of trailblazing NBA player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, has been sentenced to 180 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to stabbing a neighbor multiple times during a confrontation in 2020.

According to TMZ, Adam was accused of slashing his neighbor with a blade after an argument over trash cans escalated. The accused was facing four charges including two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. And the sentencing came after he pleaded guilty to the charges. Adam could have received a much longer sentence.

Besides the jail sentence, Adam will also be on probation for two years. Prosecutors, however, registered their displeasure with the punishment, arguing that the sentence did not reflect the severity of the crime. Prosecutors also said Adam could possibly serve his 180-day sentence in home confinement.

“This slap on the wrist is an absolute miscarriage of justice,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement. “The Orange County District Attorney’s Office vehemently objected … because we believe the complete disregard for human life over a dispute over trashcans is so egregious it warranted prison time.”

The 2020 incident occurred after the victim, identified as Raymond Windsor, encouraged Adam to assist an elderly woman to move some trash cans. Prosecutors said that infuriated Adam, and he then went ahead to stab Windsor in the head, neck, back and side. The victim was 60 years old at the time.

Following the incident, Windsor filed a lawsuit against Adam. Windsor claimed the attack nearly killed him. “The victim in this case has not only suffered serious physical issues, he is suffering from the trauma of having to relive this violent attack every day he walks out into his front yard,” Spitzer said. “This is nothing short of appalling.”

Adam is set to begin serving his sentence in January.
