Serena Williams made a grand entry at this year’s Met Gala when she revealed her second pregnancy on the red carpet. It also appears the tennis champion had been keeping the good news from her daughter and big-sister-to-be, Olympia – though she eventually got to know.
Williams took to her Instagram to share a video of the moment she and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, told their daughter the wonderful news. “Olympia does not know right now that I am pregnant, so the big reveal will be at the Met, and then before we leave, I’ll tell Olympia,” the 41-year-old said in the May 5 video.
“The reason I haven’t told her is because she can’t keep a secret,” she jokingly added. The video was reportedly shot not too long before Williams and her husband revealed they were pregnant for the second time, per PEOPLE.
Prior to attending the Met Gala, Williams also took to Instagram to share photos she took with her husband that showed her baby bump. “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala,” Williams captioned.
In a first-person essay for Vogue last year, Williams opened up about evolving away from tennis and her desire of becoming a mother for the second time. She also revealed that the “thought about having kids” never crossed her mind during the early stages of her career.
“There were times when I’ve wondered if I should ever bring kids into this world, with all its problems. I was never that confident or comfortable around babies or children, and I figured that if I ever did have a baby, I would have people taking care of it 24/7,” she wrote.
Despite having “a lot of support”, Williams said she’s an “incredibly hands-on mother” when it comes to taking care of Olympia. “In five years, Olympia has only spent one 24-hour period away from me. This past year, while I was recovering from a hamstring injury, I got to pick her up from school four or five days a week, and I always looked forward to seeing her face light up when she walked out of the building and saw me waiting there for her,” she stated.
“The fact is that nothing is a sacrifice for me when it comes to Olympia.”
