Comedian Rickey Smiley celebrates son graduating with honors from his alma mater: “I Did It”

Comedian Rickey Smiley, 55, commemorated his son’s graduation day with a video titled “I Did It: The Malike Smiley Graduation Documentary,” which features behind-the-scenes footage and a brief interview with the 22-year-old.

The video’s caption read, “Seeing our son Malik Smiley graduate with HONORS from the Alabama State University was absolutely awesome!!!!!”

During an interview with his parents, Malik thanked his family for ensuring he finished school, and said, “I feel good, man. Been a long four years. That’s for sure. Never would have thought I made it this far.”

Besides his studies, the 22-year-old played as a guard at Alabama. He wants to practice criminal and injury law after graduate school and law school.

Rickey Smiley, who also graduated from Alabama State, received an honorary doctorate in May. The famed comedian obtained the degree from Miles College and delivered this year’s commencement speech. 

Rickey Smiley spent time at the institution during his college matriculation before graduating from Alabama State University. During his address, he discussed his first comedy gig at Miles College, as well as his memories of the college’s staff.

“It would not be a Rickey Smiley if it was not for Miles College. Graduation is just the beginning…now we’ve got to get out here and make it happen,” he said.
