Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill made the news on Sunday after videos showed him being detained by police officers hours before their season-opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
But the 30-year-old wasn’t the only person to have a brush with the law as his fellow teammate Calais Campbell was similarly detained by officers and placed in handcuffs when he tried to help Hill during the traffic stop, the New York Post reported.
“For him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some type of way,” Campbell, 38, told NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe about the incident after the Dolphins’ 20-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. “But that just goes to show how resilient we are. We didn’t let that stop us.”
Miami-Dade police said officers detained Hill during a “traffic incident”, adding that they’re reviewing what occurred. Hill was ultimately released, but he was cited for reckless driving.

“We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers,” Director of Miami-Dade Police Department Stephanie V. Daniels said after the incident. “I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as further information becomes available.”
In the wake of the incident, Hill expressed his gratitude to his teammates who tried to help him during his encounter with the law enforcement officers. “I loved that. I was f—— fired up, dog. To see Jonnu, to see Calias,” Hill said, per KSWB-TV.
“You know, right there in the heat of the battle with me, man. That goes to show that it’s more than about football. The brotherhood that we got outside of just football is amazing. ‘Cause those dudes were like really risking their lives for me.”
Hill’s detainment did not deter him from effectively contributing on the field as he scored an 80-yard touchdown during their game against the Jaguars. He also celebrated with a handcuff gesture.
Meanwhile, the Miami-Dade Police Department announced one of the officers involved in the traffic stop has since been placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of an investigation, CNN reported.
“Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter. One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted,” Daniels said.
“I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.”
