A Massachusetts woman was violently assaulted by Ian Atkinson, 34, after she failed to greet him while watering her plants. The incident, which was captured on camera, took place in Dorchester in July last year.
Atkinson, who brutally attacked the 59-year-old victim in her front yard, was found guilty on Monday, according to prosecutors.
“When people say good morning to you, you should say hi, you crazy b—-h,” Atkinson told the victim as he walked by her as she was out watering her garden.
A surveillance camera recorded the suspect repeatedly punching the woman in the face and violently throwing her against a fence. The attack only ceased when the victim bit Atkinson, as reported by the New York Post.
He then fled the scene in his SUV, nearly hitting her as he drove away, according to prosecutors.
The victim, who sustained a broken nose, head and facial contusions, and a broken blood vessel in her left eye, was treated at a hospital following the attack.
Police arrested Atkinson, who was wearing a GPS monitoring device at the time, days later after the victim provided his license plate number.
“For this victim, a pleasant summer morning descended into a violent and cruel ordeal for the most inexplicable of reasons,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.
“But, even as she was being attacked, she had the presence of mind to record video, and that decision, along with her brave testimony, provided enough evidence for the judge to make his decision.”
Atkinson, who waived his right to a jury trial, was convicted of assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon.
He received a sentence of two years in state prison followed by two years of probation.
