Convicted musician R. Kelly has been placed in solitary confinement pending the outcome of an investigation after a retired warden’s phone number was found in his notebook.

Per TMZ, Kelly, 59, is being held at a federal prison facility in North Carolina. The disgraced singer’s lawyer, Beau Brindley, told the entertainment news outlet that Kelly landed himself in trouble after he participated in a mentor program to assist with providing guidance to fellow inmates. The warden at FCI Butner Medium 1 supervised the program.

The warden is said to have retired not too long ago, and he gave his cell phone number to Kelly before leaving. The warden gave his number to Kelly in case the singer wanted to get in touch with him for advice on the mentor program.

Kelly’s cellmate was later found in possession of a mobile phone, which is illegal in prison. Kelly’s lawyer said that prison officials found the retired warden’s number in the singer’s notebook after searching their cell. The number was said to be written in the notebook.

Brindley said that Kelly was ultimately put in the Special Housing Unit while prison officials investigate how the retired warden’s cell phone number landed in his notebook, TMZ reported.

“For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement or internal security procedures for any inmate or group of inmates,” a federal Bureau of Prisons representative said in response to the case.

Kelly has a very long prison spell, and this recent incident adds to his woes. In 2021, the 59-year-old was sentenced to 30 years in prison in New York after he was found guilty of racketeering, bribery, illegal sex with minors, among other crimes.

The following year, Kelly was handed a 20-year prison sentence in Chicago after he was found guilty of producing child pornography and enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity.
