Women in Kenya took to the streets of Nairobi to show support to the woman who was asked to breastfeed in a toilet by a waiter at a local restaurant.
The protestors headed to the restaurant, Olive Garden, where the mother, known as Betty Kim had been told to either cover up while breastfeeding her one-year-old or go to the toilet.
Kim had complained on a Facebook group about the incident, which took place last week.
Mothers came to her defence, condemning the restaurant for flouting her rights and for being insensitive. Kenya has a law that requires companies and establishments to provide a nursing area for mothers.
Chanting on their way to the restaurant, the protestors led by the Women of Kenya on behalf of their children also called for action to be taken against anyone infringing on their rights to breastfeed.
The restaurant’s manager, Moses K. Wambua, profusely apologised for the mistreatment of the woman and promised the protestors that once identified, the offending employee will be fired.
“They can even change their babies in the boss’ office. We don’t care. We are very sorry if this [the shaming] happened … we did not know … we learned about it on social media,” he said.
