Grenada, lovingly called the spice island, is one of a few Caribbean islands that hold their jouvert (carnival) celebrations way after Lent. One of its most iconic yearly festivals, the Spicemas festival, is world renowned and slated to happen from August 13th and 14th this year.

The festival is the perfect opportunity for summer vacationers to enjoy the island’s tropical weather, upbeat island music, and colorful splendor. But the Spicemas festival is not only a celebration of the season, it is the island’s recollection of its deep and complex African cultural past.

Scroll through the list for the rich cultural scenes to expect and their history.
