When Nigerian musician Falz unveiled his remake of Childish Gambino’s viral video This is America, it sparked a nationwide conversation and quite a handful of people who had seen it concurred with its message and theme.
This is Nigeria tackles the social ills in Nigeria, highlighting aspects such as corruption, crime and exploitation.
The beautifully crafted and powerful song and video also received numerous commendations outside Nigeria with legendary African-American music mogul and businessman Diddy notably giving it a thumbs up.
With the song receiving heavy rotation across radio stations in Nigeria, the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) moved to ban it claiming the song is “laced with vulgar lyrics” which Falz actually found amusing.
Despite the ban which was a bit too harsh, Falz can most definitely hold his head high as he boldly and courageously addressed issues usually reluctantly talked about in Nigeria.
