It was a night of glitz and glamour in Bangkok, Thailand, where 93 beautiful women contested for the Miss Universe crown which was won last year by South African, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

History nearly repeated itself in the 67th edition of the pageant, however, Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, won second place behind Miss Philippines, Catriona Gray, who took the crown.

Green was the only African woman in the final and she dazzled in a sleek silver dress when she walked gorgeously into the finals with Ne-Yo’s song Miss Independent. She stood for love in her answer to the question posed by comedian Steve Harvey: What is the most important lesson you’ve learnt in your life, and how will you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?

“Throughout my life, I’ve been exposed to both those who are privileged and underprivileged. And what I’ve learnt is that we are all human, we all want to be loved, we all want to belong and we all want to be seen. So we should treat each other that way. Thank you.”

Tamaryn Green has proved her passion for making a positive and progressive difference in the lives of others. She grew up being exposed to two very different worlds – the fortunate and less fortunate – and wants to assist in bringing those two worlds together.

24-year-old Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, is from Paarl in the Western Cape, and a final year medical student at the University of Cape Town with her sights set on specializing in paediatrics once she qualifies.

Here are some highlights of the night:
