Pygmy Hippopotamus

The pygmy hippopotamus is native to West Africa and as it name suggests, it is much smaller than its cousin the Nile hippo. The pygmy is a nocturnal and particularly shy animal that lives on the banks of rivers and streams. The IUCN classifies the pygmy hippopotamus as endangered, with populations in the wild estimated to be less than 2,000.
