10 iconic black activists who visited Ghana in the 50s and 60s

Sylvia Ardyn Boone-1960s

African-American writer and activist and women activist Sylvia Ardyn Boone also came to Ghana through the influence of Maya Angelou.

Celebrated as Yale’s first black woman professor, Boone studied art history and Afro-American studies, specialized in African art, female imagery, women’s arts and masks. After studying in the USA, Sylvia relocated to Ghana and studied at the University of Ghana staying there until becoming a visiting lecturer at Yale in 1970. While in Ghana she worked closely with Maya Angelou and W.E.B Du Bois.
