Gaza Empire

The powerful kingdom of Gaza existed in the 19th Century between Southern Zimbabwe and Southern Mozambique. The empire was established by Soshoangane a Chief from modern South Africa who escaped capture. For most of the 19th Century, there was a powerful kingdom between southeastern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique known as Gaza.

At the peak of its prosperity in the 1860s, it covered most of the land between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. The empire was named after his grandfather. The empire became very strong and traded with the Europeans until it was led into war to fight against the Portuguese and captured in 1895.
