5 controversial African cartoonists who get on politicians' nerves

Ramón Nse Esono Ebale

Ebale is a cartoonist and illustrator from Equatorial Guinea. He used his work to criticise the state of affairs in the country and its leader, Teodoro Obiang Nguema.  Ebale, who lives outside his home country, was arrested when he landed at home to renew his passport. The government charged him with money laundering and counterfeiting, something many people believe was a ruse to arrest him over his controversial cartoons.

He was released in March 2018 after a long campaign by human rights groups.
