The long history of segregation in Peoria is still being felt at the moment as black residents have more financial and employment issues than the white folks. According to the research, “black poverty rate is 37.0 per cent – higher than the national black poverty rate of 26.2 per cent and well above the metro area’s white poverty rate of 9.2 per cent.” Also, 17.9 per cent of black residents is unemployed as compared to 5.6 per cent of white residents.
Homeownership rate is 31.4 per cent for black residents, a much lower figure when compared to the 76.1 per cent figure of the white.
