6 African music video directors killing the game with their artistic ingenuity

Mpendulo Mabindisa – South Africa

Mpendulo Mabindisa, otherwise known as Motion Billy is a filmmaker and music video director from Khayelitsha, South Africa.

At the young age of 25, Mabindisa is working with the same artists he grew up admiring.

In 2017 he directed a video for South African rapper Reason titled “Celebrity” and received major accolades for it. He explained, “It was a big opportunity that I had to grab with both hands and I am pleased that not only Reason but his fans loved the video as well,” as published by News24.

He’s multi-faceted too. Mabindisa after receiving his diploma for filmmaking, he studied sound engineering at Damelin College. “I remember when I was looking for internship work in sound engineering, I was struggling until someone recommended the Media Film Services where I offered my services without remuneration,” he mentioned.

“While working there I started doing music videos for local artist and most times it was for free. A year into the job I was offered a paying position but I had already decided that I was going to film school. Its hard for people who come from disadvantaged areas like me to make it in this industry, so I knew that I needed to get a solid foundation by getting formal education,” he continued. [sic]

After spending four years at the aforementioned company, he has now become the guy local artists call when looking for a dope director.

Mabindisa hopes his journey will inspire other budding directors as well.
