The actor and comedian started doing stand-up comedy as a teenager and later joined the cast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. When he was 21, he co-starred with Nick Nolte in 48 Hours and chalked subsequent box-office success with Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. He continues to star in many movies, including comedies, dramas and family films.

The writer, singer, and producer has written and produced such films as Norbit and the 1987 stand-up comedy film Raw, which he co-wrote and executive produced, is still the No. 1 box office comedy concert theatrical release to date, having grossed more than $50 million. The comedian, who penned the stories for such films as Boomerang and Beverly Hills Cop II, recently wrapped production on an upcoming Netflix film called Dolemite Is My Name directed by Craig Brewer. The story follows the life of blaxploitation star Rudy Ray Moore.

Noted for films such as Life Vampire in Brooklyn, Tower Heist,  The Nutty Professor, Harlem Nights, and Eddie Murphy Raw, his highest grossing movie is The Nutty Professor 2, which earned $166.3 million worldwide.
