Nigeria’s shocking Akwa Ibom jailbreak
Forty-seven inmates escaped from the Ikot Ekpene prison in Akwa Ibom last December after attacking kitchen staff that were on duty. According to the Nigeria Prisons Service, the escapees seized an axe from a fellow inmate attached to the kitchen, and in the process inflicted a deep cut to the inmates’ head. The escapees subsequently made for the rear entrance to the prison, where they broke the door with the axe and battled the staff that chased them. Four of them died from gunshot wounds while the other 36 managed to escape.
