African Union raises concerns over use of chemicals in Syria attacks

by Nduta Waweru, 6:51am April 15, 2018,

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat has condemned the use of chemicals and other weapons internationally prohibited under international law in Syria.

This comes after an attack last week in the suburb of Douma, east of Damascus. that saw the death of at least 42 people dead from suffocation.

Mahamat insisted that any response to such attacks must be evidence-based and compliant with international law and primacy of the UN Security Council.

He called out the international community to set aside their differences and ‘spare no effort in the pursuit of global peace and humanity’s good’.

“The Syrian people have suffered far too long,” he tweeted.

The United States of America, Britain, and France launched an attack on Syria following the chemical attack as a punishment to the Assad Regime.

There have also been calls for a lasting solution to the crisis in the Middle Eastern country.
