How Africans were telling time before clocks and watches

Clock tower — Wikipedia

Clock towers

These were erected in public places of different cities and they helped people who could not afford timekeeping devices to determine the time. The first ever clock towers rang bells to inform people about the prayer times and they could be heard from afar. As time went on, modern timekeeping devices like clocks and watches became more accessible and less costly and hence these towers exceeded their timekeeping duties and basically became artworks that decorated the cities.
