Law and Order star S. Epatha Merkerson has made a $1 million donation to Talladega College, the oldest private, historically Black college in Alabama.
Per AL.com, Merkerson was present at Talladega College’s 150th commencement that took place on May 4; she was the keynote speaker for the event.
The chair of Talladega’s Board of Trustees, Rica Lewis-Payton, told CBS 42 in a statement that the “transformative gift” from Merkerson “sets a powerful example of philanthropy and will have a profound impact on Talladega College.”
“It ensures that this institution remains a beacon of light in the community that fosters the development of future leaders for generations to come,” Lewis-Payton added. “We are privileged to have generous friends and donors, such as Ms. Merkerson, who believe in the mission of our historic institution and who are willing to invest in its future.”
During the event, Merkerson, 72, was conferred a Doctorate of Humane Letter, which is an honorary degree. “It’s important to give back,” the award-winning actress told news outlets about her donation.
“I have had a lot of luck in my career, and I came down here and met some wonderful people who embraced me immediately. I felt at home, and I love what this college has done over 150 years.”
Besides Law & Order, Merkerson has landed roles in several projects including Lackawanna Blues, Radio, and Chicago Med. Merkerson has also similarly received honorary doctorates from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Montclair State University, and the University of Pittsburgh.
