Veteran actress Angela Bassett is a proud mother of twins, and she recently explained how motherhood helps her get in sync when she’s playing the role of a president in movies.
During a May 18 interview with PEOPLE at the New York City premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Bassett, 66, said that though she lends her children an ear, she still has the final say on any decision.
“I think being a mom really actually helps, ’cause you have constituents,” the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star said in reference to getting in sync for a presidential role. “You listen sometimes, but they need to adhere. You have veto power.”
Besides assuming the role of president of the United States in the latest Mission: Impossible film series, Bassett also did the same on Netflix’s Zero Day.
“Whenever I’m portraying them, I’m hoping and waiting for the day where life will imitate art. We’re not there yet, obviously,” she explained. She also said she hoped that playing the role of a president would “in some way” have an effect on people being more welcoming about a woman possibly becoming president.
“Maybe [it’s] for some people to see representation,” she told PEOPLE. “We always talk about that idea of seeing yourself in film and theater, seeing what’s possible, human interaction. So I think … the film is aspirational in its way, so one day, one day. We’ll get there.”
Bassett in the interview also revealed her plans for the summer and the activities she wants her children to be involved in during that season.
“We’re looking to see how they enjoy working for a living,” she said. “They have some internships coming up. Some have long hours [and] some are in the business.”
“We’ll see how they feel about it afterwards because it all seems so glorious and glamorous,” she added. “So we’ll see after they really go to work.”
