Actress and comedian Ayo Edebiri took to social media a few days ago to touch on a period where she received what she described as the “most insane death threats and racial slurs” after Elon Musk commented on a false report claiming that she was being considered to replace Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Per CNN, Edebiri, who is of Bajan and Nigerian descent, opened up on what she experienced on her Instagram story. Though the false report is no longer available on X, Musk’s February 2024 comment on that post still remains.

Depp, 61, is fondly remembered for playing Captain Jack Sparrow in previous Pirates of the Caribbean movies. But the renowned actor was dropped from the movie franchise, which is owned by Disney, after his ex-wife Amber Heard published an op-ed saying that she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

The false report about Edebiri being considered to replace Depp drew Musk’s attention, and the South African-born billionaire and Trump ally commented on the post saying, “Disney sucks.”

“Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life (idk if it’s the #1 moment, but for sure top 3) for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man,” Edebiri, 29, wrote.

Edebiri comment on the incident came after fellow comedian Bill Burr called Musk an “idiot” during his appearance on NPR’s Fresh Air. Edebiri, before sharing her post about Musk, posted a screenshot of what Burr said about the Tesla founder. “Bill Burr. Every time!” she wrote alongside a bullseye emoji.

Edebiri’s comments about what she experienced following Musk‘s reaction to the false report drew a private response from a friend who implied she would excel if she landed a role in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, CNN reported. The 29-year-old also shared that message.

“Wait no DEI, but I’ve changed my mind maybe we could make some money idk lmk,” the Golden Globe winner stated on a lighter note.

Edebiri also addressed the media on Wednesday after her story about Musk made the news. “Stop making my IG stories news,” she wrote. “I’m just tryna have a silly goofy time.”
