Music queen Beyoncé was among the honorees of the Television Academy’s first wave of 77th Emmy Award winners in juried categories, recognizing achievements in Animation, Costume, Emerging Media Programming, and Motion Design.

On August 12, the Television Academy revealed that the 43-year-old has won her first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Costumes in Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming. The honor went to the ensembles that appeared in Netflix’s Christmas Game Day halftime show, sometimes known as the “Beyoncé Bowl,” which broadcast on Christmas Day 2024.

The show’s costume designer, Shiona Turini, assistant costume designers Erica Rice and Molly Peters, costume supervisor Chelsea Staebell, and head of workroom Timothy White also received Emmys for their work costuming the spectacular event.

The Beyoncé Bowl took place at NRG Stadium in her hometown of Houston, Texas, on December 25, 2024, during the NFL matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. The performance marked the first time Beyoncé performed songs from her Grammy-winning album Cowboy Carter live.

Her halftime set included “Blackbiird,” “16 Carriages,” and “Ya Ya.” She surprised fans by bringing out Post Malone for a rendition of “Levii’s Jeans” and Shaboozey for “Sweet Honey Buckiin’.” The performance concluded with “Texas Hold ’Em,” during which Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, joined her on the field.

The Emmy-winning costumes were essential to the visual extravaganza, combining Cowboy Carter’s thematic aspects with high-energy performance gear. Turini’s collaboration with her design team helped create the show’s striking look, which complemented Beyoncé’s powerful stage presence.

Beyoncé’s Emmy victory comes ahead of a possibly historic evening in September. She is still nominated for two Emmys: Outstanding Variety Special (Live) and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special with co-director Alex Rudzinski.

However, in the former category, she will compete against her husband, Jay-Z, 55, whose nomination comes for his involvement in the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, headlined by Kendrick Lamar, according to People

Jay-Z’s partnership with the NFL through Roc Nation plays a key role in selecting the halftime performer—and could be recognized by the Television Academy for that work.

If both Beyoncé and Jay-Z win in their respective categories, the moment would mark an unusual and high-profile awards night for the couple, underscoring their shared dominance in both music and televised live events.

For Beyoncé, the Emmy win is another milestone in a career already filled with music’s highest honors, including several Grammy awards and a long list of chart-topping albums and singles.

Per Deadline, the 77th Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which will be held at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live over two nights in a row on September 6 and 7, will feature the presentation of juried awards.

According to the Academy, juried category submissions are assessed by a panel of specialists in the appropriate peer groups (animation, costume design, emerging media programming, and motion and title design), with the possibility of one, more than one, or no entry receiving an Emmy. As a result, there are no nominees, just a one-step review and voting method. During the deliberations, each entrant’s work is openly discussed, and the merits of giving the Emmy are carefully examined.
