A January 6 Capitol rioter, who was pardoned by Donald Trump after he took office as president, was fatally shot by Indiana police following an altercation during a traffic stop on Sunday.
Per local reports, authorities said a sheriff’s deputy shot and killed Matthew Huttle, 42, after he allegedly got into an altercation with the law enforcement officer. Huttle was also said to have resisted arrest during the traffic stop.
Indiana State Police in a statement said Huttle was pulled over by a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy around 4 p.m. on Sunday. Authorities also said officers attempted to arrest Huttle, but he resisted and got into a physical altercation with one of the officers.
“An altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect,” police said in the statement.

Police also said that Huttle “was in possession of a firearm” when he was pulled over, though they did not disclose if he tried to use it or the place they located it, Newsweek reported.
“For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer-involved shooting. Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Mr. Huttle,” Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson said.
As per standard policy, the officer who fatally shot Huttle has since been placed on administrative leave.
Trump moved to pardon Huttle as well as over 1,500 other people who were convicted of their involvement in the deady 2021 Capitol insurrection. Trump, who is serving his second term as president, took that action on his first day in office.
Huttle and his uncle, Dale Huttle, were arrested and charged in connection with the riots after they made their way to Washington to partake in the events that unfolded. Huttle was inside the capitol for ten minutes, and he was handed a six-month prison sentence after he entered a plea deal. His uncle pleaded guilty to assaulting an officer with a flagpole and was sentenced to 30 months in prison, Newsweek reported.

It is likely there will be some worries that Trump moving to pardon the January 6 rioters will trigger subsequent violent and illegal acts. Huttle’s killing also came after authorities rearrested a different January 6 rioter pardoned by Trump. That individual, identified as Daniel Ball, has been charged with federal gun crimes.
