Shirley Chisholm

Born on November 30, 1924, Shirley Anita Chisholm became the first Black woman elected into the United States Congress, representing New York 12th Congressional District for seven terms (1969 – 1983). She was the first Black candidate for a major party nomination for the president of the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party nomination. Chisholm died on January 1, 2005.
