This movie has a personal connection to its director, Ryan Coogler, whose father was a huge fan of Rocky’s movies. Ryan also had an emotional connection to the movie because of Rocky’s battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2015, and his father’s challenge with an undiagnosed disease, according to cinema blend. Creed was shown on the big screens to coincide with the 40^th anniversary of the opening scene in 1976’s Rocky. It was so impactful, the National Board of Review ranked it as one of the top ten films in 2015, according to Warner Bros.
