Donald Glover taps Malia Obama to help write new ‘Beyoncé-like’ series for Amazon

Malia Obama has reportedly landed her first professional entertainment job as she is set to be a part of a team of writers Donald Glover has recruited to help develop a series for streaming giant Amazon Prime.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the news of Malia’s involvement in the development of the upcoming project comes after Glover signed a multiple, eight-figure production deal with the streaming giant after parting ways with Disney platform FX.

Per the details of the deal, the award-winning rapper and actor will exclusively produce a host of projects including a potential series called Hive. Though the series is still in its early stages of development, the Atlanta actor has already started recruiting a team of writers to help with its production, and 22-year-old Malia is reportedly part of the group. Glover will also team up with Watchmen writer Janine Nabers to produce the series – whose plot is said to be focused on a Beyoncé-like character.

Malia’s first major entertainment gig comes after a string of internships on notable projects including HBO’s comedy series, Girls, in 2015, according to New York Post.

The daughter of the former U.S. president is set to graduate from Harvard later this year. Though she and her sister, Sasha, usually keep to themselves and have managed to stay lowkey despite the spotlight, their father dropped some details about their personalities in a November interview with InStyle.

“Sasha is, as Malia describes it, completely confident about her own take on the world and is not cowed or intimidated—and never has been—by anybody’s titles, anybody’s credentials. If she thinks something’s wrong or right, she will say so,” Obama said.

“When she was 4, 5, 6 years old, once she made a decision, she would dig in and couldn’t be steered off it. I write about it in the book, how we were trying to get her to taste caviar when we were visiting Russia. She was like, ‘Mnn-nnh. No. Sorry. That looks slimy. It’s nasty. I’m not going to do it—even if I’ve got to give up dessert.’ And that part of her character has always been there.”

The former president continued: “And Malia, she is just buoyant. She’s somebody who enjoys people, enjoys life, and enjoys conversation. She’s never bored, which is a badass quality that can take you places.”

Although Glover has parted ways with FX, the production of seasons three and four of Atlanta for the streaming platform will still go ahead as planned with him on board, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sources told the news outlet the production for both seasons of the popular comedy series will begin in March. In what looks like a busy year ahead, Glover will also produce and star in the remake of 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith for Amazon.
