Communal consummation
This was mainly the custom among the Northern African Berber people. A newly married couple would consummate their marriage either alone, or with other newly-married couples in a shared wedding chamber.
With this shared experience, couples learn the art of love-making and get used to each other. The newly wedded couple will then stay with the other couples for five days. On the last day, they are all presented to everyone in the village.
Those with veils have them lifted by their husbands for all to see and admire their beauty. The bedsheets from their first night as a married couple are also presented to the village as proof of the bride’s virginity before the wedding.
