Bridal party a witness to the consummation
In some parts of Morocco, a woman’s bridesmaids were usually present during post-wedding festivities. After a marriage ceremony, a Moroccan bride would be lifted up on a circular cushion or table and the groom on the shoulders of his friends.
The two would then be carried to the bridal chamber where they would be expected to consummate their marriage. The bridal party would often hang around to witness the loss of the woman’s virginity to her new husband.
The bridesmaids would sometimes even stay to actually witness the couple’s first sexual intercourse. They would then examine their sheets for signs of blood to confirm the bride’s virginity. The couple would then head to their new home.
