African American Heritage Trail, Louisiana

In this trail, the guests will get to retrace the steps taken by black people in the state of Louisiana. From the escape of enslaved black people to their fight in the Union Army and from exhibits of jazz musicians to visits of age-old plantations that are still operational today, the trail offers a diverse history of enslaved and freed black people who have made an impact in the U.S.

Some of the notable ones include Samuel Northrup, whose 12-year a slave journey has a specific trail for the guests; the intersection of the French and African cultures; and the historic place where popular film Steel Magnolias was shot.
