Africa continues to attract visitors from all over the world due to its historic sites, unique monuments and of course, its significant archaeological discoveries.

These sites represent Africa’s true identity and rich history but sadly, they continue to face the risk of destruction posed by various factors such as natural disasters, unplanned urban developments, poaching, a growing population, and pollution.

Many of these historic sites and archeological treasures have been listed as World Heritage Sites by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), meaning they have official status and protection. However, the UN has also not been able to do enough to prevent them from being threatened.

Meanwhile, these archeological discoveries are key as scientists continue to uncover mankind’s ancestral past throughout the world.

Below are some of the most treasured archeological sites in Africa that continue to shed considerable light on the continent’s history and glory.
