Former NFL star Braylon Edwards intervened to rescue an 80-year-old man from a potentially fatal locker-room attack in Michigan. Edwards, known for his college career at Michigan and his time with the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, was at a YMCA in Farmington Hills on Friday when he heard a commotion inside the locker room.

He described hearing an argument about music being played too loud and initially minding his own business before stepping in, according to Daily Mail.

“The noise escalates, and then you can hear some pushing and shoving, so you know what fighting sounds like, but once I hear a thud, that’s when I got up and turned around.”

Edwards intervened to stop a 25-year-old man from assaulting the elderly man at a YMCA locker room in Michigan. Edwards described the attacker grabbing the victim’s head and preparing to slam it down on the counter when he intervened. Police later informed Edwards that his actions likely saved the elderly man’s life.

“I didn’t know it was that serious,” Edwards added. “I mean the victim probably had a serious concussion by nature, but it wasn’t until I talked to the detective Jacobs down in Farmington who told me that if I didn’t step in [he could have died].

“But at the end of the day that’s what you do.”

The 25-year-old attacker was arrested by police after attempting to flee the scene and is currently in custody.

Edwards, known for his record-setting career at the University of Michigan where he became the first receiver in Big Ten Conference history to record three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, played four years with the Cleveland Browns before joining the New York Jets.

He also had brief stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks before concluding his career with another season with the Jets.
