Mugisha, a popular 37-year-old Ugandan LGBT advocate, was ranked 44th for his audacity in speaking against the Anti-Homosexuality Bill passed into law by the Ugandan parliament in 2014.

His spirited campaigns across the country led to the invalidation of the bill by the Ugandan courts.

“Imagine functioning in a society that still criminalizes – and even debates the death penalty for – homosexual activity. That is the world facing Frank Mugisha,” the magazine writes.

Uganda is considered to be one of the most-homophobic countries in the world today.
