In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood heist drama, four men have been arrested in Egypt after they attempted robbing stores in Cairo while dressed as Egypt’s international soccer superstar Mohamed Salah.

According to the international soccer news platform Goal, the armed gang of men tried to attack a store on the popular Hassanein Heikal Street, in Nasr City, eastern Cairo.

But the men, all in the Salah masks, were interrupted by security personnel. They tried to escape but could not and were all arrested.

Salah’s stock as an African soccer star and international ambassador for various projects has risen since he joined the English soccer club, Liverpool FC in the summer of 2017.

The 27-year-old is by far Egypt’s most successful soccer talent in Europe over the last decade.

Salah’s brilliance led Liverpool to winning Europe’s flagship club competition, the Champions League in 2019. He also scored the most goals in England’s premier soccer league as Liverpool missed out on the championship by just a point in the same year.

Salah represented Egypt in the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and participated in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Later that year, he debuted for the senior national team. Following his performances at the 2012 Summer Olympics, he was named CAF Most Promising African Talent of the Year.

He was named best soccer player in Africa by the continent’s soccer governing body, BBC African Footballer of the Year, and was selected in the Africa’s Team of the Year and Africa Cup of Nations Team of the Tournament all in 2018.

Salah has played for teams like El Mokawloon, Basel, Chelsea, Fiorentina (on loan) and Roma (on loan) and is one of the highest-earning sportsmen in the world.
