Rapper Plies has filed a lawsuit against GloRilla, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and several music companies, accusing them of stealing a key beat from his 2008 track Me & My Goons for their popular song Wanna Be.

The Florida rapper claims that the trio’s collaboration on the 2024 hit unlawfully borrowed from his original music, a beat that has resurfaced in the rap industry.

According to Billboard, Plies is alleging his ‘infrared countdown beat’—a specific element in Me & My Goons—was first copied by Soulja Boy in 2010 with Pretty Boy Swag and has now reappeared in GloRilla, Megan, and Cardi’s latest track.

Cardi B features on the remix of Wanna Be, which has become a major success, drawing in millions of listeners worldwide. However, Plies argues that the beat, a distinctive feature of his original song, has been misused without permission.

In addition to naming GloRilla, Megan, and Cardi in the suit, Plies has also named several other entities involved in the song’s production and distribution. Megan’s production company, Hot Girl Productions, is listed as a defendant, along with Collipark Productions, Universal Music Group, Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group, and Interscope Records.

So far, neither the female rappers nor Soulja Boy has publicly responded to the lawsuit or the accusations. However, LilJujuMadeDaBeat, a producer who has worked extensively with Megan, took to social media to challenge Plies’ claims. Although he was not involved in producing ‘Wanna Be,’ he argued that Plies’ 2008 beat was influenced by earlier music.
