Serena Williams, who owns Angel City FC with her husband Alexis Ohanian, has expressed support for Gotham City’s star player Lynn Williams. Despite her allegiance to Angel City FC, Serena Williams was impressed by Lynn Williams’ achievement of becoming the league’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Sam Kerr.

Serena Williams set aside her competitive spirit to praise Lynn Williams, who responded humorously to the accolade. Serena Williams captioned on X, “Congrats Cuz.” This left the audience confused about whether the pair are cousins in real life. On the Good Vibes FC podcast, Lynn Williams offered her take on the same, according to Essentially Sports.

She said, “I should just keep this joke going. I’ve been reading people thinking we’re actually cousins and somebody was like, ‘I’ve been wondering if they’re actually cousins and I looked at their legs and that’s DNA that runs in the family.”’

With 79 goals, Lynn Williams is now a certified NWSL great. She expressed gratitude to her teammates for the crucial role they played in her success.

The 31-year-old remarked, “I couldn’t score any of the goals without teammates.”

“If I have to score and I get to score, that’s amazing. But if I have to track back on defense and let somebody else score, that’s also amazing.”

She attributes the team-oriented environment at Gotham FC as a contributory factor to their championship win last season. But, the same cannot be said in the case of Angel City FC which faces a starkly different situation.

Despite having a squad valued at over $180 million, Angel City FC has struggled to translate their investment into performance, currently sitting 9th in the NWSL standings. With a record of 3 wins, 4 losses, and 2 draws in 9 games, they have scored just 11 goals while conceding 16.

Compounding their on-field issues, the club is also facing challenges off the pitch, as it is actively seeking new investors.
