Greatest black icons who are still earning millions even after death

XXXTentacion — The Atlantic

XXXTentacion

The controversial rapper, who was shot to death this June in an apparent robbery in Florida, was known for his raw and daring style of music. Real name Jahseh Onfroy, the rapper shot to fame by releasing snippets and full versions of his songs on SoundCloud.

In 2013, he started recording and releasing music after a stint in a juvenile detention centre. Within two years, he released several projects, both as a solo artist and also as a member of the Members Only music group. In early 2017, the track “Look at Me!” became his first breakthrough hit but at the time the song was making waves, XXXTentacion was in jail following his arrest on charges including aggravated battery of a pregnant victim and false imprisonment.

By the time he was released from jail in March of last year, “Look at Me!” was climbing the Billboard Hot 100; a month later, it would peak at No. 34. His debut album, “17,” was released last August, and has been certified gold. In March, he released his second album, “?,” which made its debut at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart.

For someone with a violent criminal history, at the time of his death, he was awaiting trial on charges of battery, false imprisonment and witness tampering. He pleaded not guilty. Nevertheless, for achieving some big things in his music career this year, he made $11 million in the past year after gaining 4 billion streams, according to Forbes.
