Authorities in Miami-Dade said that they dismissed the domestic violence case against boxer Gervonta Davis on Tuesday because the victim has opted not to prosecute.
Davis, 30, was initially charged with misdemeanor battery over a June 15 domestic violence incident with his ex-girlfriend. He was ultimately arrested in connection with the incident in Miami Beach on July 11. He was released that same day after he posted a $10,000 bond, ESPN reported.
“This case was dropped as the victim is declining to prosecute per her victim attorney, Lindsey Chase, Esq. and her sentiments we directly confirmed by the Assistant State Attorney handling the prosecution,” the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office told TMZ Sports.
“The witness to the incident, who is the victim’s mother, also failed to cooperate and failed, after being subpoenaed for a prefile conference on Thursday 8/7. Followed up attempts to contact the witness (mother) via phone were unsuccessful.”
Authorities further explained that the incident “itself was not observed by the police officer who had been called to the scene eliminating him as a possible witness to what had transpired.”
In the wake of the incident, Davis’ ex-girlfriend informed police that she and the boxer got into a verbal altercation over “personal matters and Gervonta having insecurities about the sexuality of their son,” ESPN reported.
The June 15 incident is said to have occurred at her home, and when Davis came over to pick up his children. She claimed that while the children were in Davis’ vehicle, the boxer hit her “on the rear of her head with a closed fist.” She also claimed that the boxer slapped her face.
The woman allegedly suffered a minor cut inside her lip, and she reportedly sought medical care at a local hospital in the wake of the incident. It also appeared that it was not the first incident of such nature, as a note on the police report implied that the number of undocumented physical altercations involving Davis and his ex-girlfriend stood at “approximately 10,” per ESPN.
