Former NFL player Randy Moss just finished his cancer treatment at Charlotte’s Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. The 48-year-old rang the bell at the hospital on Morehead Medical Drive to commemorate the special occasion in a video that was uploaded on Thursday, September 4.

“I want to thank everybody at this hospital for welcoming me to be a part of their family,” Moss said, according to WBTV. “Y’all do a great job of taking care of people. I thank you all. God bless you.”

In 2023, the renowned wide receiver was found to have Stage 2 bile-duct cancer. According to reports, he had a six-hour operation to remove some of his organs prior to receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

According to Atrium officials, Moss faced several difficulties along the way, but he overcame them.

“Randy met each moment with the same grit and determination that defined his legendary career,” according to a representative. “Thank you, Randy, for trusting us with your care. Your strength inspires us all.”

After missing the last two months of the previous season of Sunday NFL Countdown due to a cancer diagnosis, the NFL Hall of Famer finally returned to the ESPN show on Sunday, September 7.

His ESPN colleagues joined in on the emotional return.

“We’ve got a lot, and I mean a lot, of video in today’s show, but none of it will be better than this, because not long ago, our dear friend Randy Moss had this moment, one that we and all football fans everywhere had been waiting to see,” said Countdown co-host Mike Greenberg as footage of Moss ringing the bell rolled.

“It’s just a great day, man,” Moss said during his Countdown return, smiling widely. He continued by giving his doctor a “shout-out” as he recalled his appearance on the show during Super Bowl 2025 in February, months after quitting ESPN in 2024 to concentrate on his health.

“I remember seeing you guys on Super Bowl Sunday, and that was one of my goals, to get here,” the NFL commentator said, “and now all my treatment is over, ringing the bell, now I’m back with the family, man.”

Moss stepped away from ESPN in December 2024. Shortly after, he revealed in an Instagram Live that he had been hospitalized for about a week and had undergone surgery after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

According to him, his doctors diagnosed him with cancer when he sought medical attention after noticing that his urine was discolored. On Thanksgiving Day, the NFL analyst informed his fans that he had had the first of multiple surgeries to place a stent in his liver.

Moss also encouraged his followers to get frequent cancer screenings, especially if they were Black men. “By the grace of God, my liver started acting up,” he said in the Instagram Live, later adding, “I didn’t think I would ever be in a position like this, as healthy as I thought I was.”

Moss was raised in Rand, a community in West Virginia’s Kanawha County, per WOWKTV.

Moss played wide receiver for Marshall University before being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft. Moss was named a two-time consensus All-American in 1996 and 1997 while he was a member of the Herd.

Moss spent 14 seasons in the NFL between the Vikings, the Oakland Raiders, the New England Patriots, the Tennessee Titans, and the San Francisco 49ers. He was named the 1998 Rookie of the Year, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the class of 2018 and the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Marshall University’s HerdZone calls Moss “possibly the best athlete ever produced by the State of West Virginia.”
